Talus has been at the forefront of modern, multi-story self-storage development since 2003 when it introduced its pioneering building at 120 Wicksteed Avenue in Toronto. Over the years, Talus has constructed over a million square feet of self-storage facilities, spanning from Vancouver to Halifax. The company specializes in seeking out opportunities at prime AAA locations with high barriers to entry, resulting in the creation of high-performing self-storage buildings.
Collaborating with Cowden-Woods Design Build Limited and WPT Architecture, we served as the Structural, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineers of Record for a significant project comprising eight mini-storage buildings, totaling approximately 100,000 sq.ft. Additionally, prior to the start of construction, we assumed the role of Civil Engineers of Record. This allowed us to ensure the previous design was implemented correctly, working closely with Cowden-Woods and the City to successfully close out the Site Plan Agreement.Building A, one of the structures in the project, was an interior storage, high-bay, conventionally steel-framed building, equipped with essential safety features like a fire alarm system and temperature and humidity controls. On the other hand, Buildings B through H were drive-up, pre-engineered storage buildings, constructed on a reinforcing concrete slab foundation. Notably, Buildings B through H featured radiant in-floor heating, with a centralized boiler room situated within Building D.

Located on a sprawling 7.2-hectare site, this development encompasses 126 single -family homes and 41 townhomes, all interconnected by 1.35 kilometers of roads. The stormwater is efficiently directed to two large stormwater management ponds through an extensive network of 900 meters of piping. Additionally, a sewage pumping station is strategically supplied by 1.32 kilometers of sanitary pipes and 420 meters of sanitary forcemain, ensuring effective wastewater management for the entire community.
Located in the north end of Barrie, Sister Catherine Donnelly Catholic School strives towards instilling lifelong learning skills and personal excellence based on a foundation of faith, school and community support.
Working with the Simcoe-Muskoka Catholic District School Board, we were the civil engineer of record for the drainage swale and stormwater management design at Sister Catherine Donnelly Catholic School. Prior to the design, the site did not allow for positive water runoff to the existing pavement and storm system which caused ponding in various areas. The new design resolved the drainage issues that were negatively impacting the playground area and provided the school and its students with a safer, drier playground area.
The new Severn Fire Station No. 2 marks a substantial upgrade for the Township of Severn Fire Department compared to the previous facility at the same location. This state-of-the-art fire station has not only resulted in reduced response times for the thriving community but also provides ample space for training exercises and significantly expands the capacity for vehicle storage and equipment.
Collaborating closely with various esteemed Sub-Consultants, including the Architect, Landscape Architect, Surveyor, Geotechnical Engineer, and Designated Substance Surveyor, we served as the Prime Consultant and Engineers of record for this 8,300-sq.ft. Fire Station, complete with a pre-cast concrete mezzanine. The building was meticulously designed as a pre-engineered structure, featuring a 4:12 roof pitch to complement the original building that was demolished as part of this project.
Two-storey semi-detached walk-out dwelling units w/ a second suite on the lower level located in Barrie, On. The existing infill lot was severed to provide a total of six dwelling units. The primary dwellings consist of a three-bedroom, three bathroom and 1,700-sq.ft. of living space. The main floor has 9-ft. ceilings and offers an open concept living/dining/kitchen, and the second floor provides a spacious master bedroom w/ an ensuite & walk-in-closet a comfortable office/workspace and two additional bedrooms with a shared bath. Each basement is provided w/ a two-bedroom, one bathroom, 800-sq.ft. second suite that incorporates an open concept living/dining/kitchen and has direct access to the ground level at the rear of the dwelling. The rear of the lots have also been designed for a 450-sq.ft. detached accessory dwelling with full basements.

In our role as the Mechanical Engineer of Record, we successfully conducted a fire code review for the installation of the paint booth in collaboration with Flatline Spray Booth Specialists. Our comprehensive assessment encompassed material usage, facility layout, filters, and exhaust specifications, ensuring compliance with environmental registration requirements under the Ontario Environmental Activity and Sector Registry (EASR). Additionally, we utilized air modeling and conducted analyses of odour and noise to meet Ministry standards.

Together with ISM Architects, iSPAN Systems, and Bertram Construction (Ontario) Ltd., we brought forth our collective expertise and dedication to ensure the successful realization of Patterson Park. The building shell stands firmly on robust concrete foundations, while the renowned iSPAN Total Framing System forms the backbone of this architectural marvel. Reinforced concrete Form-Walls contribute to the elevator shaft and stair walls, reinforcing the strength and stability of this exceptional structure.

As the structural engineer of record for this concrete repair, we worked closing with Primo and the contractor to determine the extent of the repairs needed, the timing and staging of the repairs, and the details for the repairs, including waterproofing requirements.

Collaborating closely with the esteemed Architect G. Douglas Vallee Ltd., we proudly served as the Mechanical Engineer of Record for this remarkable project, encompassing a combined firehall and EMS station spanning an impressive 13,100 sq.ft. Our design drawings featured innovative elements, including the option for infloor heating in the ambulance and fire truck bays, ensuring optimal comfort for emergency personnel. Additionally, we implemented a specialized dehumidification system exclusively dedicated to the firefighters’ equipment drying rack, prioritizing their safety and well-being. With the collective efforts of all design teams, we embraced the power of collaboration through Revit, enhancing coordination and facilitating collision avoidance, ultimately delivering a seamless and efficient project.
